Chronology of cameras Zeiss Ikon
It is funny how the Tropen ("Tropics" in German) turns into Colonial, in French. Other time, other customs. The so-called "Tropen" cameras at Zeiss Ikon are generally models that exist elsewhere in the product line, but their manufacturing respects a certain number of constraints: wood resistant to temperature and humidity variations, mould-resistant sheathing and bellows. In most cases, these cameras are made of teak, an exotic wood widely used in the navy for its robustness, its resistance to fungi and its virtual absence of deformation. The assembly of the various pieces of wood can be reinforced by metal parts, in particular at the corners of the camera body. The bellows are in treated skin. The metal parts (pinion, rail, etc.) are made of non-oxidizable alloy or nickel.
The Tropen-Adoro perfectly fits in this category and has been a success for Zeiss Ikon. Coming from the Contessa-Nettel company, it had a long career under the Zeiss Ikon brand. It has been available in several formats: 6.5 x 9, 9 x 12, 10 x 15 and more confidentially in 8.3 x 10.8 cm.
These cameras feature double extension, two-directions lens shift, Tessar lens and Compur shutter. Tropens are always expensive cameras due to materials and specific workmanship. Thus no variant with lens or shutter that are not high end exists.
